Fencing in Kimberly: what's actually different here

Kimberly grew 41.7% between 2010 and 2020 — by far the fastest growth of any city we serve, and the single most useful fact about fencing here. That growth means most of our Kimberly work is first-fence installation on new construction, not replacement. New builds come with bare, often compacted ground, no existing fence line to work from, and neighbors on both sides who may be fencing in the same season. Getting the property line right matters more here than anywhere else on our list, because there is no old fence to inherit the line from.

The other consequence of new construction is exposure. New subdivisions on the edge of town sit on open ground with no mature trees and no established windbreak, so a 6-foot privacy fence there catches considerably more wind than the same fence in an older neighborhood. We size post embedment for the lot as it is now, not as it will be in fifteen years when the trees fill in.

Kimberly sits at 3,914 feet, the highest of the Twin Falls County towns we cover, on the bench above the Snake River Canyon. The town takes its name from Peter L. Kimberly, an investor in the Milner Dam that made irrigated farming possible here — the same 1905-era reclamation story as most of the Magic Valley, and the same consequence: irrigation water near fence lines, and hardware specified accordingly.

Because so much of the work is new construction, we get asked about phasing more here than elsewhere: fence the back yard now for the dog and the kids, add the side runs and a gate later. That is a reasonable way to spread the cost, and we will lay out the posts so the later phase lines up instead of looking bolted on.

Questions

Fence questions from Kimberly

What does a fence cost in Kimberly?

Standard Magic Valley bands apply: about $20–$45 per linear foot for wood, $25–$40 for vinyl, and $10–$25 for chain link, installed. New-construction jobs often come in slightly below the middle of those ranges because there is no old fence to remove — the $3–$8 per foot demolition line simply is not there. A typical 150-foot privacy run on a new build lands around $3,750–$6,000.

My house is new and there's no fence anywhere yet. Where's my property line?

This is the most important question on a new build and the one worth spending money on. If your builder left survey pins, we will find them and build to them. If they are gone or were never set, a survey before we start is genuinely money well spent — putting a fence on the wrong line is far more expensive to fix than to prevent, and on a new subdivision there is no old fence to inherit the line from.

Are Kimberly's fence rules the same as Jerome's?

No. Jerome's 6-foot rear and side limit, its 3-foot front-yard sight rule, and its 7-foot permit threshold apply in Jerome. Kimberly sets its own requirements, and new subdivisions frequently add HOA architectural rules on top of city code — those often specify material, color, and height more tightly than the city does. Check both before ordering.

Should I fence the whole yard at once or in stages?

Staging is common here and it works fine, as long as it is planned. Fencing the back yard first for pets and children and adding side runs later is a reasonable way to spread cost. Tell us the full plan at the measure so we can set the first phase's posts and gate positions to line up with the second — retrofitting a phase that was not planned for looks exactly like what it is.

Is wind a problem on the new subdivisions?

More than in the older parts of town, yes. New developments sit on open ground with no mature trees to break the wind, so a solid 6-foot privacy fence there takes a real load. We either upgrade post embedment and tighten post spacing, or suggest a shadowbox design that lets air through while still screening the yard.
